Chechen Government Sends Scholarship Students to Bellerbys College

23 Chechen students arrived in Britain last month as part of the country’s first sponsorship scheme aimed at the rebuilding its education system after a brutal war.

Under the scholarship scheme, the brainchild of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, students will join the Foundation course at Bellerbys, leading to a place at a British university for successful students.  Britain was selected as the destination of choice due to its international reputation for excellence in higher education.

Saidov Zaurbek, from the Chechen Ministry of Education said: “The aim of the programme is to develop qualified specialists with world-recognised degrees.  These professionals will then return to Chechnya with the transferrable skills necessary for the economic and social development of their country.

“Establishing a relationship with leading international educators like Study Group is just one of the steps the Chechen Ministry of Education is taking in the mass reconstruction of the education system.  If successful the programme will continue with up to 100 students sent abroad each year.”

The Principal Goes To Russia

John Rushton, Principal, Bellerbys College Cambridge

Last month I spent 10 days in Russia, to meet parents, prospective students and agents. I had a hectic schedule, involving visits to three cities in the Urals, in addition to several days in Moscow.

I flew to Moscow and stayed in a hotel near to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The next day I did a presentation to agents, followed by interviews with prospective students. Later in the evening (23.15 to be precise), I took a flight to Chelyabinsk, a major city in the Ural Mountains and spent two days with local agents, parents and prospective students. Afterwards, I travelled to Ekaterinburg for another day of visits and interviews. That evening the temperature fell to minus 27, which even the Russians admitted was cold for mid-November.

Next I caught the night sleeper train to Perm, a city known, amongst other things, as where Boris Pasternak wrote "Dr Zhivago". After a busy day I was given a ticket to the ballet, to see "Anyuta". This was excellent, the Perm ballet is one of the best in Russia, and it was staged in the Perm Opera House, a beautiful 19th Century building.  Having a restful evening of culture did not last long however, it was up early the next morning for a 06.00 flight back to Moscow!  Because of the time difference the flight left at 06.00 and arrived at 06.20, which made for a full day of meetings in the Russian capital. There were then four full days in Moscow, before flying back to Heathrow on Sunday.  What a trip!
