Quynh Anh Pham Le
Quynh Anh Pham Le from Vietnam
Studied A Levels at Bellerbys Oxford
Grades achieved: A*A*A*A
Secured a place at London School of Economics to read International Relations
Quynh Anh is an exceptionally bright and enthusiastic student who greatly impressed us with her positive approach to her studies and a real love of learning. She is ambitious but also a warm and generous person, very willing to assist other students. She ran the college Debating society and the Economics club. She was a very popular student, respected by her peers, and really took advantage of the international school environment.
At the end of her AS year she won the Richard Ryde Scholarship, awarded to the top AS student from all four Bellerbys colleges. Here are some words from Quynh Anh herself:
“Last year I was very fortunate to be awarded the Richard Ryde scholarship. I remember the train journey to Brighton on a beautiful day, with my Politics book on my lap as I had an exam the next day. The other candidates and I were all extremely nervous but as we started chatting to each other, I felt a lot more relaxed and got to enjoy the experience very much. The interview was actually much more comfortable than I had imagined and the following day I was told the good news by Jo, our Academic Director, and was so extremely happy that I could not wait to call my family even though it was midnight in Vietnam!
My last two years spent at Bellerbys College Oxford have been one of the most inspiring and enjoyable parts of my life. Not only does the school provide a warm international atmosphere, but also students are given a lot of personal attention and help from our wonderful teachers and staff. I personally find the debates and discussions we have during classes the most attractive side of our school, but my other friends would probably say that it is the well balanced social-academic life Oxford offers that they enjoy the most.
Due to the time difference I did not find out about my A Level results until the afternoon, but fortunately they were definitely worth waiting for! The phone call I had with programme manager, Yasmin, really made my day. I feel my efforts during the last two years have paid off, and I would like to say thanks to my teachers and friends at Bellerbys College. Surely what I have achieved so far is largely thanks to my dedicated teachers, my great host family and friends who have made Oxford my second home. Although I am really looking forward to taking up a place at LSE to study International Relations, I know I will be missing them very much.”
Ian Walker who taught Quynh Anh Politics for two years says “Quynh Anh had the wonderful ability to hear a political argument, digest it and respond in depth, often from a new angle. She is an extremely gifted student who really enjoyed the discussions we had in a small but very talented Politics class. These debates were illuminating and I learned a lot about how people from around the world see things differently and was always keenly interested to listen to Quynh Anh's point of view.”
Her Maths and Economics teachers, Carol Yeung and Linda Webster, comment on her lively mind and superb powers of reasoning. Yasmin, her French teacher says “Quynh Anh is an outstanding linguist. She also has a very fine, questioning mind and always probes beyond the obvious. It has been a real pleasure to teach such a talented student over the past two years.”
